Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of personalities, and a gripping narrative showcasing angels, demons, and malevolent powers increasing in influence within the urban setting.

Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

Episode 3 ended with a dramatic pause and presented the initial group of characters who will branch out from the main group to undertake their own adventure, distinct from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor (played by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura), the fierce warrior (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

The Reason for Division

Considering 13 cast members, it was evident from the beginning that having everyone at one table would be impossible.

Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, connecting the characters’ stories before splitting into three smaller tables: Warriors, Planners, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Warrior Group

As described by the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for participants who are drawn to a typically action-packed fight-heavy gameplay experience where diplomatic options are rare.

Initially, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might appear out of place, but the events of the third episode show why these particular heroes are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the party knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the campaign’s events—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, striking the rogue, and stealing all the enchanted items to sell off.

Casimir then cleared his obligations and escaped to a fortified location in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each adventurer has a individual motive to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and best friend, desires revenge.
  • The adventurer knows the region and cautions that it is a hostile place.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having resisted his relatives’ demands to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their status as important members in the powerful family could enable the group enter locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character swore a life debt to The cleric for his rescue and will now accompany him wherever.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are sought by the rulers that govern the city for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The cleric betrayed the powerful family and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • The target is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This results in them few options but to journey toward the remote area in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s follow-up content, we discover that the combat party will not appear the following episode, leaving the remaining eight players to form the Seekers and Schemers parties.

Fans can look forward to discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
